Yaoi Comic “No Kissing” Is Ready For Download!

Tough: Chapter Two Cover

Guess what? The second chapter of our gay teen comic Tough, “No Kissing”, is now finished and ready for Yaoi 911 News & Downloads subscribers to download!

This will serve as the master post for Tough Chapter Two: “No Kissing”. Here is where readers should leave comments about what they thought about the comic and it’s also where I’ll be sharing the first 16 preview pages with you!

What’s the second chapter about?

The fight from Chapter One is over, the bad boys have slunk away in defeat and to celebrate their victory hunky Rob has invited 15-year-old Filipino-American Mike Castro back to his place for some Xbox and Hard Lemonade.

After a few drinks and a few fighting games, Mike is feeling relaxed and cocky. Sure, he’s alone in the bedroom of an out gay guy, but they just saved each others’ lives and Mike has made Rob promise there’s not going to be any “gay stuff” — and certainly no kissing.

But when Rob starts giving Mike a backrub, Mike is forced to question how much he can trust this older, more experienced boy. And as Mike begins to like the massage more than he should, he starts to wonder exactly how much he can trust himself

What about spoilers?

So folks are able to talk about the work without worrying about spoiling the story for others, I’ve added a new feature to the blog comments: spoiler protection! It works like this. Put the spoiler text into your comment between bracketed “spoiler” tags like this

Just click the “SHOW” button to reveal the text. Until then, it’s hidden. Pretty nifty, huh? (And if you want to learn more tricks with this plugin, feel free to check out the tutorial created by the author.)

So, when does Chapter Three come out?

Well, we’re working on it. πŸ™‚ Our goal is to have it finished in a few months, just like this chapter was — but my experience tells me that stuff happens so I don’t want to give a firm date until I know we’re only weeks away. That said — don’t despair, you can still get your Yaoi 911 fix before then! Our first full-length, for-pay graphic novel, Artifice, is being colored right now and that means it should be done before the Fall. So, one way or the other, we should have another comic for you in a few months — and trust me, Artifice has it all: sex, action, romance, androids, evil robopsychologists and an adorable and scrappy young love interest. It’s going to be awesome!

Please tell me what you thought!

So that’s what you need to know about our latest comic. I really do hope you like how Mike’s story is coming along. Please take a moment and let me know what you thought in the comments below!

  1. OMG that was kinda hard to read but not in a bad way. I am used to read yaoi where the characters have the typical manga looks. I had to pause several times while reading. And all the time I was like OMGOMGOMG, to much hot stuff to handle my brain is gonna explode haha. And my heart was like racing the whole time when I was reading. Sorry a bit hard to explain in English, but this chapter was awesome. I have really fallen for this comic^^

By hard to read I meant that it was so good to read that I had to constantly pause from all the kick I got from reading it. One thing I have found out by reading this comic is that the typical yaoi mangas is actually kinda boring in comparison. A girl like me needs something more. Now I want to find out where I can find more sweet love stories like this here comic with realistic characters and teen/ sweet romance. You get so much more from the realistic kind of characters like in this comic.

    Thumbs up for this chapter^^

  2. @YaoiLover4Ever

OMG, what a stunningly delightful review! I have this big grin on my face! You couldn't have said anything more wonderful to this creator. πŸ˜€

Or, frankly, more reassuring! I'll be honest — I know we're doing something different here. I'm making the comics I've always wanted to read and I know my tastes can be, well, unique…. ::blush:: Part of me has been afraid that readers might turn up their noses at more true-to-life characters with more naturalistic art. Me? I really dig it. And I LOVE Vitto's and Winona's art. And, well, I knew others would also appreciate the art because Vitto and Winona are awesome – but to hear from another reader that she is now craving these kinds of stories — and that she finds the characters realistic and compelling — well, that makes all the hard work feel totally worth it!

And, of course, I'm very glad you found it hot. There wasn't much of the man-love in the first chapter — I was hoping Chapter 2 might make up for it some! Glad to hear Mike and Rob were able to quicken the pulse a bit… πŸ˜‰

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience. Big smiles here! Please come back soon! πŸ˜€

  3. Well i have read both of your comics and they seem to have blown normal blck and white yaoi out of my dictionary. I absolutely loved your comic it is heart warm and funny. I can connect with the character im actually in love with some one younger then i. i find that when your in love age is but a number. everyone finds them selves when there a teenager.

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

im not as talented as you but i am also a write i enjoy writing poems and stories id love it if we can get in contact via email. [private email address redacted] is my main email. thanks so much cant wait for more

  4. I really enjoyed the banter. πŸ™‚ Usually you just get boy-meets-boy, boy-jumps-boy, and there they go! (or, worse, it's a quasi-rape scene) I appreciate the playfulness of their exchange leading up to the kiss. It's romantic, realistic, and it's a great way of showing the natural awkwardness of that kind of moment.

BTW, I just pimped out Yaoi 911 at my blog, so hopefully that'll bring more people here.

EDIT: Oh, yeah – go San Francisco! I'm in the East Bay, so seeing familiar Victorians got me all excited.

  5. Getting this second chapter of Tough in my inbox today really really made my day.

I'm by no means an art critic nor do I claim to know anything about art but, I must say, the artwork in this chapter really took my breath away. The cover alone made my heart beat a little faster. πŸ™‚

The fifth panel on page 31 had such a beautiful, realistic quality to it that I looked at it for ages!

I also really love how the characters are developing. I have a real soft spot for Mike – especially after this chapter. His progression from playful hesitancy to finally giving in to his desires was kind of sweet to me!

I'm really looking forward to Chapter 3! And, of course, to 'Artifice'. If 'Tough' is the type of work you guys are putting out for free, I can just imagine how awesome 'Artifice' will be! *waits in anticipation*

  6. Dead Alex,

"No Kissing" was soooooo worth the wait! You actually got me to blush (and it's hard to make me blush)…

This chapter's cute, funny, hot and possible. It could be the story of your neighbour instead of a fictional character! πŸ˜€

I bow for your great work and hope you'll never lose inspiration.

    XOXO Fluus

PS: Yeah, lesbian girls read yaoi too. πŸ™‚

  7. Oh my god! I'm so sorry for that HUGE mistake!!! English isn't my first language, nor my second, so I'm surprised it's the first big mistake I made. But it's still a really stupid one. My apologies, DEAR Alex.

The panels that I was blushing about were:

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

Big compliment for Vitto and Winona Nelson. Keep up your great work, all three of you!

(By the way, the party got cancelled. So unfortunately I couldn't make any progress with that girl this time. But now that I've read your tip, I'll try getting her to read "tough" and "no kissing" first. Or maybe even making a move while she's reading it… Hopefully she'll take the hint.)

  8. Err…what´s the meaning of "No kissing" here, it was a joke, wasn´t :D. I loveeed the banter between the two, very exciting, hot and funny. I didn´t expect the initiative to Mike at the end of surrendering to their wishes. I'm really enjoying how their relationship is developing, so soft, sensual, romantic and cheerful.

I have to say one thing, Rob is very smart and knows how to seduce someone. Well, after "those initiatives" until I fall on that, for sure. πŸ˜€

Oh my! I'm anxious to know what going to happen in chapter 3. More games? I hope so πŸ™‚

    Hugs. πŸ™‚

  9. @Sandrinha – Err… I´m correcting my comment, because english isn´t my original language, perhaps, it has become dubious. What I meant was that you played with the title of this chapter: "No kissing", I was really surprised by the unfolding of events, so many kisses πŸ˜€

    Hugs πŸ˜€

  10. @Fluus

Please don't worry about the mistake – I thought it was very funny! It reminded me of an old comedy skit with Richard Pryor and Chevy Chase. πŸ™‚

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

Thank you so much for sharing what made you blush — I love hearing about how specific moments affect readers! πŸ˜€

And good luck with the girl — please keep us posted on your success. (And perhaps create a little yuri comic about it? πŸ˜‰ )

    @Sandrinha

I'm glad you like my play on the title — we writers love the irony! Coming up with titles is one of the best parts of writing. I've had a lot of fun with titles on the upcoming chapters — just to give you a heads up, Ch 3 is "Brother's Keeper", Ch 4 is "What Are Friends For?" and Ch 5 is "Waiting" You'll have to let me know what you think of them too. πŸ™‚

Mmm… "Soft, sensual, romantic and cheerful" — just how this gay boy likes it…. πŸ˜€ And glad you found the banter funny and hot — just what I was going for.

And as for next chapter, well, there won't be much seduction – it's just Mike and his sister But after that, there will be lots of fun "games" and I promise, Rob has many more seduction moves we haven't even seen. ;-p

Thank you very much for taking the time to comment! It's lovely coming home to read these!

  11. Wow! Such awesome comments! What a great thing to wake up to! πŸ˜€

    @yaoi_yuri_lover

What lovely things to say — I’m so pleased that you are liking our style and especially the color. Even though I love regular b/w manga, color for me really adds something important, so for our comics (even though it’s a lot more expensive), I wanted to have it. Many other creators told me it wouldn’t be worth it — that readers wouldn’t care — so it’s great to hear that it made a difference for you. πŸ™‚

Also, delighted to hear you enjoyed the humor — I tried to have a couple laugh out loud lines in there! — and that you connected with the character. There are few greater compliments than having your work speak directly to a reader — I hope I’m able to continue that connection for you in later chapters.

And thank you for wanting to connect with me directly through email. I’m actually terrible at correspondence (just ask any of my friends ::blush::) and email in particular because, being a writer, I always feel I have to send something super polished. So if I don’t feel like I have an hour to write a decent response, I tend to procrastinate… like forever. O_O But I’m always happy to connect with other creators. Comments on this blog are the best way to reach me — I tend to feel it’s a moral imperative to respond right away (yet I don’t feel as much pressure to write a novel in response.) If you’d prefer to connect with me through email, I’ll do my best — please just forgive me if I’m super slow to reply!

Thank you so much for letting me know what you thought of this chapter! πŸ˜€

    @piggy

Glad everything got sorted out. And glad to hear you enjoyed the art and writing!

    @Hayden Thorne

Yes – the banter – my favorite thing to write! πŸ˜€ My writing friends who review my work often talk about my boy banter — and let me tell you, there’s lots more where that came from, especially in Chapter 4, “What Are Friends For?” Glad you enjoyed it!

And I’m also not wild about non-con in romantic works. A little seduction, sure — but quasi-rape? Not the thing to get my motor running. Very nice to hear you liked the playfulness (a turn-on for me) and that you found the natural awkwardness realistic. Just what I was aiming for!

Thank you very much for pimping Yaoi 911. I have to say I Iove the quote by Toni Morrison on the top of your blog — that’s something I really, truly believe in.

And as for the San Francisco Victorians — well, believe it or not, the photorefs I sent to Vitto were from Boston! πŸ˜€ But they do look a bit like Victorians, huh? I’m just as happy to have them be a bit more generic — I don’t think I’ll ever say exactly what city our boys are in…

Thank you very much for commenting and supporting our work!

    @Lara

Oo – glad you love the art. Winona’s cover is breathtaking, huh? And those panels on Page 31 are lots of fun. Glad Panel 5 caught your eye — that’s just what we hope for! πŸ˜€

And yeah, I have a real soft spot for Mike too. It’s all new to him — and I’m trying to capture what that was like for me for my first times and thus, hopefully, what it might be like for others. And we’re all about the sweetness here at Yaoi 911! πŸ˜‰

So glad to hear you’re looking forward to Artifice, our first for-pay comic. These free comics — this is all an experiment. If we’re able to sell enough for-pay comics, we’ll be able to keep sending out the free ones. I really do think that Artifice takes our work to a whole new level. I think it’s my best writing and the artwork is by Winona Nelson from start-to-finish — and seeing as she created this cover from start to finish, I think you’re going to like what she did with a 90-page graphic novel!

Again, please come back here and let me know what you thought! It’s much appreciated!

    @Fluus

I’m really glad you felt “No Kissing” was worth the wait. And we got you to blush?! Now I want to know! Which panels got you to blush! Tell me! Tell me! πŸ˜€

And again that you could believe this could really happen — that Mike could be your neighbor or whatever — well, that’s a wonderful thing to say to a writer. It was totally what we were going for. I love me some pure fantasy, but to really get my motor running the characters have to feel real — so nice to hear that it worked on that level for you too!

Good luck with that girl! I sure hope you don’t get smacked (perhaps you could show her the comic first?). Just remember that Rob’s cocky moves are only truly effective and safe after you’ve saved someone’s life… Just saying… πŸ˜‰

(And yes, I know lots of cool lesbians who enjoy yaoi. Just as this gay man enjoys well-written lesbian fiction, actually. My favorite movie of all time? Bound So cool, slick and funny. And how can you not root for those two? πŸ˜€ )

Thank you very much for taking the time to comment! Hearing from you all, well, it just makes me so happy and feel like all this is worth it. Please keep letting me know what you think!

    Dead Alex,

Oh, and um, are you trying to tell me something, Fluus? My zombie origins are supposed to be a secret!:-D

  12. One more thing^^ I remember when I was a bit younger. I used to read this teen magazine called Girls or was it Girlz. I don`t quite remember but anyway it came out every month filled with straight teen romance comics to read. A typical teen life. How I would have loved if I could just go to the stores or online stores buying a lil comicbook with new BL stories to read every month or two. Realistic characters of course like it was in that teen magazine Girls/z that I used to read. Just saying wouldn`t that have been awesome^^

Oh yeah, the colors it does make a difference. I would still read it even in black and white but with colors everything becomes so much more life like and I like that<3

At least I have this here comic to read then^^

  13. @YaoiLover4Ever

A BL version of that magazine sounds pretty cool. I know others have tried to create Western BL mags but have found it challenging. It'd be cool, though…

And yes, the colors do make everything more lifelike for me too — as well as a bit clearer what's going on. If a B/W panel gets too busy, this reader sometimes has a hard time knowing what's what. πŸ™‚

Thank you again for your kind words and thoughtful reactions – they are a pleasure for me to read. πŸ™‚

  14. Wow! I'm so in love with this. The first Chapter was really good but this second Chapter is absolutely hot. Not to mention the beautifully drawn cover page!

I've always read black and white mangas, but after reading this its all about the color comics now! This is the kind of realistic story I've been waiting to read.

    Cant wait to read chapter3

  15. @sweetnita

I'm delighted to hear Winona's colors have spoiled you — and that our comic is the kind of story you've been waiting to read. That's music to my ears — and, as I've said above, actually reassuring. I'm so glad that you enjoyed our work and that you took the time to share your thoughts. That's just really nice to hear.

I hope you return to share what you think of Chapter 3 and beyond! πŸ™‚

  16. @Alex Woolfson – My biases are showing! πŸ˜€ I seriously pictured San Francisco for the story's setting, but it is better to keep the city generic in order to connect with more folks.

I love the Toni Morrison quote. Not everyone's into mainstream stuff, and the lack of material from your favorite genre or sub-genre usually translates into some pretty awesome creative output, which helps fill the niche.

I look forward to the next chapter!

  17. @Hayden Thorne

I agree about lack of material being a great motivator. I was just talking to a writer friend of mine today about that — that what has always motivated me and my writing was that there were stories I've always wanted to see (with gay heroes, or at least gay people like myself) that I never get to see. And so after seeing media that misses the mark yet again, I start fantasizing those stories in my head and soon I have to find a way to bring them into the world. It's the "fire in my belly" that drives me to put in the long hours needed — and the payoff that gives me such satisfaction when I hear from others that stories I'm putting out there met some of their needs too. That's very gratifying.

And I look forward to hearing what you think of our next chapter!

    @Nanani

Good things come to readers — and characters — who wait. Something tells me you and Mike will get the ending you're looking for — eventually. But isn't anticipation half the fun? πŸ˜‰

  18. I love you. Marry me? (So unlikely but it has to be said anyway TT-TT) Marry me on a metaphysical, intellectual level.

I've been kind of lurking since your very first comic here, and every time I see yaoi911 in my inbox it makes me smile. And you have perfect timing. It's always when things go to pot that you update our lives with beautiful boy lovin'! ;D

I have to say that 'Tough' and its second chapter have been my absolute favourites so far, but it goes without saying that I haven't forgotten your other works… kind of proven by the fact the guy on the poster in the cover art for 'No Kissing' reminds me vividly of Jeff from 'Artifice'. *falls over* I feel creepy for lurking so long without commenting, but better late than never, eh?

The dialogue is so perfect. It's easy to fall into the traps of cliches and awkwardness in yaoi but you never do; it's all so realistic. While at the same time, totally suave and debonair. Whenever a scene gets awkward it's because it's meant to be awkward. (Awkward is a funny word.) Andandand. The art is fantastic! It must be so gratifying as a writer to see your characters come to life thanks to such skilled artists… Mike is adorkable. He's the kind of guy you want to hug. And thinking he's a total heart-throb! Awww. *cuddles Mike* And Rob. Page 29 panel 2, pretty much sums up all my incoherent thoughts xD He seems like a playa :O Is it bad that I'm still really apprehensive of Rob? I know you didn't intend the age gap to be that wide, but it seems that now it is, Rob might be taking advantage of our poor Mike… *suspicious* ¬.¬

Or maybe I'm just paranoid? x] I think he reminds me of somebody at my youth group who creeps me out, so I associate him with being creepy (or maybe I'm afraid of cheerleaders?) >.< This comment is getting longer than I expected… But yeah, I'm pretty much praising you on everything here. The characterisation, the dialogue, the extra special effect noises to make silly scenes sillier… and the art just made me fall over with the utter glee of how amazing it was.

    tl;dr, 'No Kissing' is splendipitous.

    <3Kat

  19. @Kat

What an awesome comment! And for me coming at a good moment too — picking me up after a minor frustration. I'll so be your metaphorical fiancee! πŸ˜€

It's really nice to hear from a longstanding follower of our work. As I've said above, I wish I could get out our work like 10x faster — and yet I'm not willing to sacrifice the quality to make that happen. So, I really appreciate those readers who have been so patient and have stuck with us. I promise, you won't be sorry! We've got lots of good stuff coming!

Glad to hear you're really liking Tough. I'm proud of how it's turning out. I was really excited to get out this chapter in particular (finally giving our readers a little kissing!) and now that I've put the final polish on Chapter 4's script ("What Are Friends For?"), I can't wait to share that story with you all too! (Some really nice boy bonding and a pretty nifty "first-time" erotic scene in Chapter 4, if I say so myself.)

But yes — Artifice — that's next! Really looking forward to sending that out! (And, as it turns out, Winona has confessed — the soccer player in the poster is Jeff!)

Thank you very much for the props re: my dialogue. I glad that the balance I was trying to achieve between realism and, well, having the characters sound cool, worked for you. And the awkwardness — others have commented on that. You know, it's funny. I never thought of that word when writing this scene — it was always more about fear and seduction and bluster and newness in my head. But I guess that's really true — there are lots of "awkward" moments! It's always fun to see your work through others' eyes — you get to see it fresh. (Something that's particularly nice after you've worked on a comic for a year…)

It is totally gratifying to have great artists work on your scripts (and the reverse, for me anyway, would be heartbreaking). I feel so honored to be working with artists of Winona's and Vitto's caliber — and lucky. I often say that "I'm trying to make the comics I've always wanted to read" — my artists make that wish real.

And Mike is adorkable! (Love that word — I'll have to start using it!) And huggable. And who knows? Maybe, someday, he will be a heart-throb!

IMHO, it's not bad at all that you are a bit apprehensive about Rob. Frankly, I'm surprised more readers haven't commented about that. I certainly would be — particularly considering the way he seduces Mike in this chapter. As we see, Mike is no fool, of course — but then again, neither is Rob. I'll be curious to hear what readers think about Rob as we get to know him better throughout the full graphic novel.

Thank you so much for your comment. It really has made my day. Please come back and comment more anytime. Let me know what moments work for you or any other thoughts you have. And of course — tell all your friends — I'm trying hard to get the word out. You sound like you'd be a great person to represent. πŸ™‚

  20. First of all, WOW! I'm a relative newbie when it comes to yaoi, having discovered it almost a year ago. Even in that short span of time I've devoured yaoi stories like cupcakes. I have to say this is turning out to be one of my favorite yaoi stories ever. And it's only chapter two. I love the fact that Mike is a hero without the cape and powers.

The Art: It's simply superb. Kudos to everyone on your team that had a hand in it. I am SO envious that I can't draw with even a tenth of the skill of these artists. I like how realistic the characters are. You were right: Vitto did an excellent job with their expressions. I also like how Mike actually looks his age. He's slender but there is a boyishness (still has babyfat) to his face and body that lets you know he hasn't fully matured yet, even when the body hair indicates he's well into puberty. Rob is gorgeous. Woah, Vitto really captured those muscles to a T.

The Storyline: Alex you are a genius and I don't say that because you are a likable guy. The story flows smoothly and IMHO is very realistic to how young men and teenagers would react in the situations you've created. I always strive for realistic dialogue in my own work and I must say you nailed it. Mike and Rob are at times funny, tender, and fierce. The story definitely kept my attention from beginning to end.

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

Oh, and did I need to say it was hot? Amazing how sexy the comic was w/o the Full Monty.

Thanks for sharing this so generously with us!

  21. @sagewhistler

Such awesome comments today. (And it is hitting at a perfect time while I am racing to catch up on notes for my artists after taking a week off to work on the release of "No Kissing". Great boost to my morale. πŸ˜€ )

Thank you very much for your kind words about the art and story. Yes, it's important to me too that Mike actually look his age (even if for some reasons it's a bit scary to include a teen as a character in a romance comic in this current climate). I think we wind up creating pretty skewed perspectives of (and for) young people by having adults portray them on TV, etc. (I know that it didn't help with my body image growing up to be looking at other "15 year olds" portrayed by 22 year olds in teen films.) And even though I am creating these comics for adults not kids, I still think it's useful to portray this accurately. A 15 year old isn't all grown up — and that's important for us to know about his character (and, ultimately, Rob's too).

Of course, Mike is well into puberty, so he's of an age when he'd (in real life) start learning about this stuff — and of an age that we as adults can remember beginning to have a romantic/erotic identity — but to portray him with a perfect and "fully mature" gym body… Well, that may make good fantasy — and there's definitely a place for that in yaoi! — but what I want to show with Tough is what it's like for a regular human being to experience these things for the first time, not some fantasy object. Hence, the normal 15 year old body for a 15 year old character, baby fat and all. I think that works both for my goals of dealing with important themes regarding power, innocence and connection as well as on the more basic level of simply creating a compelling love story you can believe in. I'm glad to hear that works for you too.

And yeah, Vitto certainly did a great job with those muscles on Rob! πŸ˜€

As for the storyline — well, now you've gotten me blushing! I feel like Mike after being told he's "not bad on the eyes"… Thank you – you are very kind. What you have mentioned as successful are things that are very important to me, so I'm also glad to hear they worked for you. And coming from a fellow writer, well, that's high praise indeed… ::blush::

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

Thank you very much also for the offer to purchase our work and spread the word. You know how hard it can be to get your work out when you're an independent creator. I'd like to think we're making something that a lot of people will connect with, but they can't connect if they never hear about it! We really do need help with this! πŸ˜€

And… the Full Monty. I actually do get a fair number of emails/feedback asking for us to deliver something "hard core" (however that person might define it.) And FWIW, just like in real life, there will likely be a time in this comic when Mike's experience will move beyond kissing — and, in Chapter 4, as written, there's already a scene where things are taken to a more… fulfilling… conclusion (which means that that comic will likely have to be for-pay to make it very clear it's not for minors).

But Yaoi 911 isn't about creating pornography — we're the romantic types here. IMHO, things are plenty sexy — and in some ways more sexy — when you leave some things to the imagination. I truly believe that things are hotter when your heart and your mind are engaged as you're reading — and that's not about seeing particular body parts or fluids. It's about believing in and connecting with the characters. It's about the feeling not the anatomy — and you see more of that in a face than in a crotch! At least, that's how it is for me (not that showing a bit of skin is a bad thing, just not the only thing… πŸ˜‰ ). It's been my hope that others might also share that experience, so it's gratifying to hear that this chapter worked for you on that level too. Yep, I want all these deeper themes and messages to come across, but the romantic scenes definitely need to be hot! And it sure is a lot of fun to make them so! πŸ˜‰

Thank you very much for commenting (and especially in giving such nice specifics). You've put a big smile on my face. I hope to see you hear again soon! πŸ˜€

  22. THX you for your comics, when I first came here,I was attractted by the cover of 'tough'.After reading the chapter 1 and the latest chapter 2,I think the most incredible thing is that you've created such a prosperrous and mellow story, the teenagers in the comic act as what the teenagers in ture world do,and the theme of the whole story is very Nice and exciting.

Moreover,I like seeing the scene when Mike and Nah are getting to lose control and kiss each other, that's really emotional.

Cause English is not my mother tongue,if I say something that not very nice, please don't mind :p

I'm really looking forward to your comics πŸ™‚

  23. Dear Alex,

    Another great chapter.

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

I love a good laugh with my yaoi and a cheeky character that makes me laugh is even better! Nicely done. The conversations where very real and your characters show a huge amount of personality which is sadly lacking in a lot of other yaoi comics. I'm very impressed!

Oh and the kissing scene was very hot! Certainly made my heart rate rise… and in a very good way!!

I noticed in your notes at the end you talked about trying to use sounds in comics and I totally understand. As a fan fiction writer, I too wrestle with the use of sound effects on a daily basis. Characters making 'ohhh' and 'aghh' sounds all the times can put off readers and sound.. well stupid so it's so hard to find the balance between getting the mood and sound effects across but not making people laugh when you really don't want them to. Saying that, you did an awesome job with this. It flowed beautifully and there were no bits in it at all that stuck out as odd, or not sounding right. Perfectly smooth when I read it, with each page flowing into the next with no hickups or awkward overuse of sound effects.

You should be very proud of this beautiful creation from you and your team. I will be looking forward to the next one!

    Best wishes,
    Madisuzy

  24. Dear Alex,

I must say i am thoroughly impressed. The artwork is amazing and the detail is great, not to mention the story line! the characters were quite entertaining as well. it truly is a beautiful masterpiece, you should be very proud. I can't wait to read more from you and your team, I'm really looking forward to it.

  25. @cjy60

You're very welcome and thank you very much for your comment. I'm glad to hear the characters felt real to you and that you were able to feel the emotion in the kissing scene. Please come back and let me know what you think of Chapter 3! πŸ™‚

I'm glad that you feel Tough compares well to other yaoi comics you've read. Like I said, I know we're doing something different here than traditional yaoi — but at the same time are looking to appeal to a yaoi-loving audience. Feels a bit like a high-wire act. Always good to hear when we've been successful in connecting to a fan!

And that you found it hot… well, even better! πŸ˜‰

Thank you for the encouragement… and the positive feedback about the sound effects. As a fanfiction writer, it sounds like you know what you're talking about!

So, I'm curious — what are your fandoms?

    @SoulEater266

A "beautiful masterpiece"! Well, that's awesome that you would think that! πŸ˜€ I'm really glad we were able to create something that you enjoyed — and I hope we continue to live up to your expectations. πŸ˜€

Thank you again to those who commented. Your reactions are a great thing to wake up to on this Sunday and it really makes all the hard work feel worthwhile!

  26. @Alex Woolfson

    Dear Alex,

To answer your question, I write in the fandoms of Final Fantasy 7 & 8 (both computer games, and they made a CG movie of Final Fantasy 7 called Advent Children). I am a fan and reader of the fandoms of Final Fantasy (7,8,9,10,12,Dirge of Cerberus,Crisis Core), Bleach (anime), Loveless (anime), JonJou Romantica (anime) and Weiss Kreuz (old anime… showing my age… lol).

I write very graphic yaoi but still enjoy reading everything from PG rated fan fiction to the hard core stuff. The main ingredient is always romance though… not into the highly violent yaoi with no emotional pluses. Although angst does rate highly for me.

I really don't measure up to a writer like you as I'm only a beginner in the writing department (just over a year since I started) but I'll link you to my page on fanfiction.net, just incase you ever want to have a good laugh at an amateurs attempts at yaoi… LOL!
    http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1752462/Madisuzy

    Best wishes,

    Madisuzy

  27. @madisuzy

Interesting. I actually have heard of Advent Children before because (in my day job) I edited a trailer for it — lots of cool, fast-paced shots; it was fun to cut. πŸ™‚

And thank you for sharing the link to your work. I poked my head around there a little (and clicked on the weird anti-gay Google Ads link in the corner just to charge the bigots a bit of money… πŸ˜‰ ). Even though I'm really not familiar with the characters in your stories, I enjoyed your dialogue and it certainly is fun to read a little "graphic yaoi"!

To be honest, I've always been impressed with the fanfiction community — looking over all your reviews, it looks like there's a lot of support there. I've often had the desire to write fanfiction for my favorite shows myself, but as soon as I get started, I start adding in my own characters or start making "improvements" to the canon universe until eventually the main series characters are really little more than an afterthought and finally I have to just say to hell with it, might as well write something original at this point! ::blush:: I really do think writing good fanfiction is its own art that to be good at requires special skills. It looks like you're getting a good response to your work and I imagine that's very gratifying. πŸ™‚

Best wishes right back – Alex

  28. @Alex Woolfson

I’m glad I could make you happy, Alex! We’ll have the metaphorical wedding in Quintember. On an Octday. (Suspend your disbelief.)

Oh, I’d much rather wait for something amazing than get something okay more often =] It’s chocolate cake over cookies, man. An album over an EP. And the anticipation keeps me waiting, I think having something to look forward to helps me deal with my own minor frustrations.

You know, I really did appreciate the kissing x] But again, I love your scripts almost as much. One writer to another, I wish my dialogue was half as believable as yours. Is it something that comes naturally to you? Or did you write before you started scripting comics? *curious and far too lazy to research it*

I really can’t wait for the next chapter to come out. How mean, leaving us with a cliff hanger *crycrycry* Oh, and I’m so proud of myself, I was right about the poster! As one of the commenters above said, all the art is so busy, but it works perfectly, I think, when your eyes are drawn to things you recognise. And I’m thinking you can learn quite a bit about yon Rob from the posters in his house. (Flat? Apartment? Bedroom? Sitting room? IDK.)

I always wonder if telling people what I really think is worth the risk, but I’m glad you appreciate a fresh look at it. I think one of the biggest factors of creating something artistically is that everyone interprets it in their own way. Of course the creator sets the scene and puts out their ideas, but it’s a lot up to the reader to see what they can make of it. I sometimes don’t appreciate feedback on my stories because I want everyone too see it like I see it, and that rarely happens. But I know what you mean, after working on something for a long time you start to look at scenes and paragraphs and you know how it’s meant to be, you know how you see it, and then somebody comments and you go, ‘oh. I didn’t think/forgot about that.’ It’s awesome, I think. =3 And the fact you’re doing this as much for yourself as everyone else, well you can tell, and I mean it in the very best way. You’re really a lot more passionate than I expect; whenever I read your ending comments I sit and giggle and it gives me another view of every scene. I especially like looking up your favourite panels and comparing them to mine. I can see you care a lot about characterisation and getting expressions just right.

I bet Mike will be totally ripped when he’s older, like somebody off Baywatch. But I do appreciate that he looks like a fifteen-year-old now – in a lot of manga and other yaoi comics you get fifteen year olds who look twenty, or they just look like girls with no chebs. I love Mike’s puppy-fat, is that odd? And you have no idea how much I love the word ‘adorkable’. I smile every time I write it.

Oooh, see, now I’m very curious about Rob ¬.¬ Is he some kind of womanizer? (I don’t know what you call a womanizer who womanizes men, sshhhhh.) No wait! He reads sci-fi comics, he can’t be that bad a guy xD *bases all her judges of character on people’s reading material* Hm, I’m just thinking that Mike seems a bit out of his depth, like he’s making bold moves because he doesn’t want to back out and be a chicken… hm… =/ I’m pondering. I think it’s not seeming like such a big age gap for me, because obviously he’s only a year or less off being legal and some of my best friends had dated much older men and women when they were in their teens… (Yes, the fact that the boy next to me in Maths was dating a 21-year-old made me feel very vanilla, since I haven’t ever gone past the two-year age gap either direction.) It just makes me hope Mike is sensible.

Also, on a lighter note, ha. Mike’s hard lemonade. Doesn’t that have about the same alcohol content as your average lager? I know perfectly respectable fifteen-year-olds who can get blitzed on four bottles of the stuff. He could pretend to be a lightweight boozer. Or something. xD

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

Put it all in spoilertags, just in case. You can never be too careful! I’m trying my very best to get as many people to read this as I can – but I am something of a closet yaoi fan x] Somehow I find it more difficult to admit I like yaoi than to admit I like girls. But for now I will surreptitiously suggest this to everybody I think would like it. I was thinking of making badges. The amount of people who use them as an excuse to stare at my chest, it might give you some publicity, yes/yes? Hehe.

    <3Kat

P.S. Wow, I didn't mean for that comment to get so long. Sorry!

  29. so hot!!! i like it! thank you very much for posting it! i love love love it! great story and artwork ! XD and oh. i appreciated the "Filipino" thing XD i'm a filipino ^^

  30. @Kat

Ah, another wonderful comment from my metaphorical fiancee, Kat! πŸ˜€

Actually dialogue is the easiest part of writing for me — I am constantly listening to how people talk and running scenes of characters in my head. For me, writing is about people and what they say to each other more than anything else. This, of course, has both good and bad sides to it.

On the plus side, my stories tend to be people-focused with plots flowing from character action — which in general readers tend to find more accessible and believable. Also, while some writers claim to find dialogue challenging, almost everyone has a pretty good ear for how people should talk and so, when you do it right, you get nice props from nice people like yourself. πŸ™‚

On the down side, in my own opinion, my scripts tend to be a bit on the talky side (instead of action side) with folks staying in one place and moving the plot forward mostly with words. Not the end of the world — and great for making low budget independent films, BTW — but it has its limitations, can feel a bit claustrophobic and it's something I'm working to break out of. Honestly, looking at the next few things coming out, I'm not quite as successful with that break -out yet as I might like, though! Ah, well — I'll keep working on it! πŸ˜€

And another challenge for me is that with prose work (think short stories and novels) I have little patience with landscape description and the like. This is one great reason why I'm drawn to write for comics and film — with a script I just get to focus on the people, their words and their actions; other, more talented folk have to worry about creating the visual world! (And when those other people are Vitto, Vincent Lee and Winona Nelson, I know the characters I lavished with affection are in very good hands so it's a total win for me.)

And yes, I've written for a rather long time. Apparently I used to dictate stories to my mother about Detective Dan (my neighbor) and Super Detective Sandy (don't ask) at the age of 3. (She claims she still has them — perfect blackmail material should I ever step out of line.) Then as a teen I wrote short stories on my own, until one day I decided to write a play that got performed at my High School. Sitting in the auditorium my Senior Year, I heard the audience laugh at my jokes and from that moment on there was no going back — I was going to write for the rest of my life. That led to a day job in the film industry, a couple short films and now to this Yaoi 911 project you see before you. πŸ˜‰

Good thoughts you're having about Rob's nature. Just so you know, as regards the "womanizer" term for gay guys question, I think "player" works quite well in this context.

I must say I was absolutely delighted to read all the specific call outs to favorite panels and moments in this comic you gave — I really love hearing about that from readers. It's like I get to share reading it with you! I of course agree with all of your reactions. πŸ˜‰

And as for advertising Yaoi 911 on your chest — well, that got me thinking. What if I created a T-shirt out of my favorite panel from "No Kissing"? That panel actually captures the Yaoi 911 vibe quite well, being a combination of realism, humor and edginess. So I did just that! (And created a few different options, with the swear word and without.) Wear our new T-shirt and pimp Yaoi 911 on the down low! πŸ˜€

Thank you again so much for taking the time to share your thoughts in such detail. Truly a delight to read and a great thing to come home to after a long, busy day!

    @pathetic

Hey, thank you! So glad you liked our comic and found it hot. And also great to hear that you appreciated it as a Filipino — that's something I'm really hoping to get right! Please tell all your friends and I hope to see you back here to let me know what you think about the next chapter!

  31. @pathetic

Well, I wish I could give an exact date, but we are still in the pencils stage with "Brother's Keeper" and until the linework is done, I don't dare predict when the whole comic will be finished — too many things can get in the way and push the date.

But I feel pretty confident saying sometime before the end of the year. Hopefully much sooner. How's that? πŸ™‚

  32. Wow, this is really cool and very sweet. And all that flirting made me go "rahhhh"… so utterly sweet and romantic. It's got that tone of "teenagers exploring their sexuality but in that 'take all their pants off manner'".

Does anyone know how to use the spoiler tag? *confused* Well, I'll give it a shot.

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

Also, was listening to some western classical music station while reading this… so the music kinda made the reading experience even more epic, I guess. =P They were playing some Spanish + Western classical piece.

Also, will you be selling ebook versions of Artifice? I can't really ship BL over in my country 'cos man… the penalties for being caught are really harsh.

  33. @Dee

    Hey Dee!

Looks like you figured out the spoiler tags — right on. But "teenagers… taking all their pants off" (!) — did you get some secret pages from Vitto and Winona I didn't?! Good golly — they've been holding out on me! πŸ˜€

Hehe. Just kidding. I really appreciate you taking the time to give me such a detailed reaction to the comic — you know, I love that!

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

As for Rob reading sci-fi comics — well, that's just a little in-joke with the cover. Some readers (and I) noticed that the poster in the cover looks a lot like Jeff from Artifice. Winona actually came out and admitted the choice was deliberate on her blog. And now readers have come to the conclusion that Rob is a sci-fi fan. Is he really? You'll just have to read on to find out! πŸ˜‰

And Kevin? I might be willing to arrange a romance for him — if there's enough interest. Anybody you'd like to pair him with?

Yes, there will be ebook versions of Artifice! Just like these comics, but for-pay and much longer — 90 pages! So you will be able to download it — but please be safe. I would rather lose a sale than have any harm come to one of our readers!

Especially one who has taken the time to write such a lovely and thoughtful comment. Thank you very much again for dong so. Please come back and let me know what you think of Chapter 3!

  34. Yesssss… there're tiny teenage dwarves and rambunctious faeries living in Rob's house and they're going into "romantic + highly sexual mode"! Nah! Oops mistake mistake… that's why I should proofread my sentences more.

I meant: It’s got that tone of “teenagers exploring their sexuality but NOT in that ‘take all their pants off manner’". =D

Glad you liked seeing our different style of bodies — it's nice to have a little variety! — I'll pass on your compliments about the coloring to Winona.

And Kevin and Larry?! Really?! Ha! Now that would be… interesting. πŸ˜€

As for the girlfriend and the rest of it, perhaps we'll find out in later chapters…

Thank you for letting me know you won't be in any physical danger or anything like that. That puts my mind at ease. Just use good judgment — I'm enjoying your comments very much and would never want anything bad to happen to you. πŸ™‚

  36. oh my god, that was amazing! XD the worst part of it all is that my next door neighbors on either side of me are named Mike and Rob. It's absolutely terrible on my subconcious and perverted mind, lol. I really love the way you draw, it's straight up realistic and not like you see in yaoi manga or really buffed up comics. I completely adore the story, and I can't say it enough, how *realistic* it is. Thank you so much for putting it together<3

  37. @personifyingowned

Hehe! Glad our work could spice up your home life!

Thank you very much for the compliments on the art — I'll be sure to pass them along to Vitto and Winona! — and for the nice things you said about my story. I'm really glad that it felt real to you — that was something I worked very hard on and it's great to hear when it's successful.

And you're very welcome! And thank you for taking the time to let me know what you thought! Please come back here and let me know what you think about Artifice and Tough Chapter Three: Brother's Keeper — it'd be great to get your impressions on those too when they come out. And tell all your friends — we're trying hard to get the word out! πŸ˜€

    Thanks again!

  38. Spoiler Inside SelectShow

Anyway, hot chapter! I love the story so far, I'm enjoying the slow build up between the main characters, I like that it isn't so slow you want to scream at the screen, and the artwork compliments the realness of the characters and the story. I like that they aren't bulging with muscles (not that I don't mind a nice tone bod :))

I can't wait for the next download.

  39. @RochRok

Haha! That's awesome! Perhaps I should give Rob your number? πŸ˜€

Thank you so much for the kind words. I'm delighted to hear that you like the slow build-up — even though I know it can be a bit of a tease, I find I ultimately enjoy those kinds of stories a lot more rather than when you get everything all up front. Ideally, it's like savoring a fine meal instead of wolfing down a burger. And yes — I don't want to tease too much — just enough… Kind of like how I'd want it to be for a first time in real life…

Also glad that you like the realness of the characters — something else that, for me, adds to the hotness and appeal of the story.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your reaction. I hope you enjoy what we send you next!

  40. Hello there πŸ˜€
I was looking for some bara action, when i found this site, my eye fall on the "free comics" session. So i subscribed, and i read all the free comics… But this one was the best! I can't describe the feelings that filled my heart. Don't get me wrong, but, even though i love yaoi/bara and western comics (class comics), this one was something different, unique, i found myself searching for something like that a couple months ago, so it's a wish come true! I'm almost 17 years old (the comic is for 16+, right? :D) and living in Greece *sigh*… And let me tell you that: my teenage heart fell in love with this comic! The storyline, the way Mike was "seduced", so imaginative

    Spoiler Inside SelectShow

… and of course the art! The covers were so beautiful, so realistic and sexy (very…).
I could write more about it, but it's already too much… So i want to thank you so much for these comics, i can't wait for the next chapter (i checked my mailbox 3 times today…)

P.S: Rob is sooo hot! πŸ˜€

  41. (7/7/10 – I edited this a bit after thinking about it some…)

    @EmmanGr

    Howdy πŸ˜€

So glad I could make your wish come true — that's great to hear! Thank you for letting me know you enjoyed the story and the covers (Winona paints beautiful guys, huh?) — I really appreciate you letting me know!

And yep, I am calling Chapters One and Two "16 and over" comics. Even though I'm not marketing to young people (just to adults), I look at those chapters and the content seems to be comparable to other 16+ comics I've read. Chapter 3 certainly will be that way, too. Chapter 4, well, it's looking like it may be 18+, but I won't know for sure until the art is finished.

Here's the deal — personally, I would like to create gay positive action comics that a young person might find inspiring and fun. It was because I never had that growing up that made me want to create these comics in the first place. When I read a comment like yours, well, it does warm my heart. I can't promise any of these characters will be great role models — they all have their flaws — but I do think just having the chance to read about heroes who happen to be gay people is something that, in itself, could be good for a gay guy in his late teens. It certainly would have been good for me at your age.

And… I also want to be able to explore serious issues of sexuality and romance in these comics and I live in a country (the United States) that has very strict laws about making materials with sexual content available to minors (meaning, those under 18). I absolutely will comply with the law and so, that means, some of my comics are going to be 18+ — like Chapter 4 of Tough. Now, there are creators out there whose visions don't get very sexual — I'm thinking, for example, of Tommy Roddy of Pride High — who seem to be happy to tell stories that will always be acceptable for all ages. But that's not me and not Yaoi 911.

So what does that mean? While I am delighted to hear that my "16 and over" comics might fill a gap in the lives of 16 and 17 year olds, some of my comics will be 18-and-over — even in a series, like Tough, that has chapters that aren't 18+. Any young person who is enjoying this story just needs to know that. Many chapters will be 16+ but not all of them. I don't want to disappoint any of my fans — no matter what age they are — but I will comply with the law.

Anyway — I'm sure that's a lot more information than you wanted! LOL! I'm really glad you took the time to comment. It does make me very happy to think that a young person in Greece connected with our work. I really hope you continue to enjoy our other 16 and over comics. And that you will again take the time to keep letting me know what you thought. It was great to hear from you. πŸ˜€

  42. H'omg. I've been talking to my friend, Barbara (whining, really) about how I was sick of yaoi being all stereotypical and overused plots and they always looked like GIRLS. The topic changed and we were talking about something else. Then, she links me here and says "Have some gaymenlove instead of boylove." XD Haha.

Anyway, I talk too much. I downloaded both chapters and I totally flipped out with everyone threatening Rob, but his comment of "Jesus Christ on cracker, you guys like to talk" made me laugh out loud for a few minutes (and of course, made me chill out. Comic relief for the win, right?). I found both chapters amusing, fun and er, hot. Yeup.
Lotsa hot. I want a Canadian lip massage now. Hell, I think a t-shirt with "Canadian lip massages are good for your health" would be hilarious.
Oh, also! I was happy that neither character was too much of one body type or the other. Rob's muscular but he's not so muscular as to make me roll my eyes and Mike isn't chubby, isn't so in shape as Rob, but he's normal, which… I don't know, it's awesome.

  43. @purpleteddi

Well, heck — I think you're awesome! Thank you for telling me such a cool story about how you found Yaoi 911.

And I'm glad you like that the bodies of our guys are more realistic than what you ordinarily see in yaoi or gay male comics. I know that won't be for everyone — but I love it too. Just feels more… well.. real. πŸ˜€

Much thanks to Barbara — if she comes to San Francisco, I totally owe her a Frappuccino. If you get a moment yourself, please pass on the love by telling your friends about us — we're really trying to get the word out! And thank you again for taking the time to comment! It's much appreciated!

    Hey there back! πŸ˜€

I'm really glad to hear that you enjoy the realism of the story and the art. "That you could actually imagine this kind of thing happening" — yep, that's exactly what I was going for, so that's a very nice compliment.

And I'm also glad you enjoyed the slower pacing. I know that's not for everyone — some folks are going to want the "wham, blur, thank you, Sir" kind of yaoi — but I'm looking to tell a larger story than just who gets busy with whom. And, frankly, I personally find it hotter when I have a chance to really get to know the characters — and there is some build-up that lets you enjoy the journey. Doing this, of course, demands some patience from the reader — some people might find it boring, some people might think I'm just trying to tease — but I really believe it makes for a stronger story and I promise it will be worth the wait. I'm glad to hear that it's working for you. πŸ˜€

And newest #1 fan? That's awesome! Please stick with us and tell your friends about our work. And please come back here to tell us what you think about what we send you next — it was great to hear from you!

  45. Hey there! πŸ˜€

I just wanted to say I read “Tough” and “No Kissing”, and I immediately fell in love with your comics! Usually, the closest thing to yaoi comics I can find are doujinshi, and I really had to look far and wide for the good ones, but this is the first time I’ve read a yaoi comic quite like this and I have to say, you guys don’t fail to please. πŸ˜€
I love your guy’s style of drawing, and the fact that the story seems really realistic, like, you can actually imagine this kind of thing happening, and I think that shows true artsmanship, when you can really draw people in and have a good feel to the comic. Also, most comics, like someone else had commented, are just boy-meets-boy, boy-jumps-boy, and then well, you know, straight to the point, but you had them slowly develop a sort of mood first, and that makes it all the better to read, if you know what I mean. πŸ˜‰ So, keep doing what your doing, and I know you guys are going to be really succsessful. Loooooooved it!

    Sincerely, your newest #1 fan,

    Yesenia Bonilla
