And I think that applies across the spectrum for romance works. I just saw a film at SF Lesbian and Gay Film Festival that was truly awful in nearly every way, and yet you got to see full frontal partial erections of very cute boys thus making for an apparently (based on the Q&A after) very happy audience. Obviously, erotic works are supposed to turn you on and for many folks the hotness comes from the visuals -- so no surprises there. (For Martians like myself, it comes mostly from character and compelling story, but I realize I'm an aberration.) Of course, what I'd like to see more of is bootyful art AND great stories in the same yaoi work. I don't think it's too much to ask... or expect. I agree with this completely: This is the kind of book that exemplifies bad yaoi. Contrived, cliché plotting; shallow, insipid characters; rapes that have as much emotional impact as a haircut…

But…

The art is impossibly bootyful. Priddy and perfect always win out over contrived and clichéd; and that’s why this book makes lots of money. It’s why this book will always get ’4 stars’ at Amazon, for being, ‘dumb’.
