This anime is my obsession for a few years now…
[and by obsession i really mean it, drawing a lot of fanarts, cosplayed main character, had a forum about it to gather these few fans from Poland ;p but it's no longer active now... oh and roleplayed as yuuri for more than a year "XD ]

I remember that when i read description i wasn’t sure about watching it.

Then when i started… fell in love with it -.-

For me it’s one of these things that you can forgive everything and still love it. *-*

Watched all 3 series, read some manga, tried to read novel but tried to do it in german and failed. [that reminds me i need to check if someone finally started to make english translation or not... back then when i was looking for it, it was licenced but they didn't start anything or even think about publishing it _-_]

And you went to Otakon 2006, right? So you've probably already heard this:

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya does not currently have a distributor, but Kadokawa has received several offers from companies; Sakuda expects it to be released in the US next year. With the first volume having sold 60,000 units in Japan, it is one of the most successful anime properties currently on the market.

Optimistic news about its appearance here, at least for the anime… And as for the novels:

When asked about the Haruhi novels and manga, Sakuda said that the company has received offers, and there is a chance that those too will be seen next year.

I don't know much about the manga either– although it's drawn by a mangaka known for yaoi, including BLU's title "Shinobu Kokoro," Matsumoto Temari. I expect that it will be licensed eventually though. The novels I'm less sure of.

On a non-yaoi-related note, when will someone be smart enough to license the Suzumiya Haruhi novels? The books are huge in Japan and the anime has been a fan favorite from the first. Yeesh!

And I'll keep my fingers crossed with you for some good OVAs. BTW, have you heard anything about the novels and how faithful the series is to them? (I also hear there is a manga adaption as well…)

As for why I think the plot killed it…what I remember of it (and I haven't watched since something like episode…60? Probably six months ago) is that it felt incredibly forced. It was also very slow-building, but because they had to spend all this time on the plot they lost so much of the comedy.

They also lost the characters to the plot! The lively, hilarious characters were a big draw for me for this series, but when the plot really started all the characters were diminished– you might not get more out of Wolfram than a single line of him being jealous in an episode, for example.

So they lost the comedy and the characters, and the plot wasn't even all that good or interesting. An unfortunate case of trying to do too much and giving the show a slow and painful death.

And the show is definitely over in Japan– the last episode was 72 IIRC, which would have been the…let's see, sixth season? The second season would have been over around episode 24-26.

But I suppose we can always cross our fingers for some good, silly OVAs. And those novels, of course!

And I agree — at the point I'm at (end of disc 7), shorter would have been better. But for me that would be because, in that case, the plot would have felt more satisfying as opposed to drawn out and repetitious. I'll be curious to find out what you mean when you say "having a real plot kind of killed it."

And now I'm curious, is the series really over? For some reason I understood that they were still in the middle of creating their second season…
