And ah, Chapter 3… There were some delays with the art, but the pencils just got finished last month and have been prepped for coloring. So right now, it’s looking like it will be ready in the Fall.

While I certainly am not looking to beat anyone over the head with a “moral”, it’s still a goal of mine with Yaoi 911 is to show heroism in many different forms. Mike makes what I consider to be a heroic choice (which, you’re right, most would not—but that’s what makes him a hero, no? ) and hopefully the reader is right there with him.

I’m glad to have piqued your interest (and made you a bit giddy with our steamy scene! )

It’s really interesting that you would say that the pacing felt a wee bit fast—I’ve always been afraid that it’s too slow! But the movie reference helps me to see what you mean. A lot of yaoi books I’ve read start in the main character’s head, thinking about his situation, or maybe we hear people talking about him, like other teachers, as he’s walking down the hall. These books introduce the character through description, either with the words in his head or the words of others, and while that’s a faster way to get to know the character, it delays the action for a bit and slows down the pace, perhaps pleasantly so.

I think you’re right that in the case of Tough, it’s different. I’m starting right with the action—much like a movie—and we mostly learn about Mike though his actions. Others do say things about him—Larry says he has “skin like a girl”; Kevin says he’s “got principles”—but they aren’t really trustworthy. The reader knows it’s not the author’s voice filling them in; it’s bad boys saying mostly bad things.

While I am writing for a female audience (and a gay and cool straight male one), I’d be the first to admit that my work is a bit…different than traditional yaoi. Hopefully, people will like what I’m doing. But I imagine it takes some getting used to! lol I hope you continue to stick with us and enjoy what we keep sending you.

As for why I chose to have a Filipino-American protagonist, I get asked that a lot! And I actually have an answer for it. But because it’s kind of long, I think it’d be best put into a blog post. If I can beg for your patience, I’ll try to get around to writing that sometime in the next few weeks.

I gotta say, despite all the media I’ve read, steamy scenes in chapter two still made me giddy. But then, and this might just be me and the amount of yaoi manga I read, the pacing is just a wee bit fast.

It kinda reads like a movie, as opposed to BL manga written and drawn by female mangaka with all the character introductions and narrations and such. It’s not something bad, maybe just a difference in style. I’m getting used to the format and I’d love to know what happens next!

What’s got me really interested in this is the fact that Mike’s Phil-Am. I come from the Philippines. I mean, I grew up and am living in the Philippines and I’ve got relatives who live in the USA so I kinda know how different types of parents raise their kids overseas. But I don’t know how it is if they turn out gay, because our notions of homosexuality is very different from the notions of Phil-Am society, I’m sure. Is Mike based on someone in real life?

The question I have, if you don’t mind, is why chose it as Mike’s lineage?
