Yaoi Art: “Pillow Fight” Pin-up by Adam DeKraker and Winona Nelson

April 16, 2011 | | Comments 64 |

The response to the first only-for-subscribers wallpaper by Ponderosa was overwhelmingly positive, so I’ve decided to send out another one. This time the pencils and inks were created by DC/Marvel/Dark Horse artist, Adam DeKraker, and the colors are by Arifice artist, Winona Nelson. (You can read a bit about them here.)

It’s Mike and Rob from Tough having a pillow fight in their underwear! Who says sorority girls have all the fun?

Let me know what you think!

As I’ve said before, creating exclusive downloads for subscribers is an experiment; one that I’m hoping you’ll like. So what do you think? Do you like seeing Mike and Rob like this? And what do you think of the art? Sweet, sexy, cool, not cool? Let me know in the comments section of this blog post! If it turns out you all continue to like these, then I’ll commission more of them. (And if you really like this one, you can get it right now as a poster or card.)

So, what’s next?

Some readers have said while they really liked Ponderosa’s art with the shirtless guys, that they would need something a little… different to show their support for Tough and Yaoi 911. Something, y’know, tamer, that wouldn’t give casual bystanders heart palpitations if they were to see it.

Well, that makes a lot of sense to me, so in addition to creating some more sexy wallpapers, I’ve also commissioned a couple fully-clothed, safe-for-Grandma ones. The first of which I’ll actually be sending you next month! It’s by yaoi artist Agent Agnes and it’s super sweet. :) Sound good?

Please let me know what you think of Adam’s and Winona’s work in the comments! :D

Want to download the high-res versions of this wallpaper? Well, it’s easy! Just fill out the form on the Free Comics page and the link will be sent to you about a week after you sign up! (And in the meantime, you get download links for the first two completed chapters of Tough sent to you immediately in the Welcome Email. That’s 70 full-color pages of yaoi goodness. For free. Score!)

  2. naruuzum says:

wow, this is simply perfect! such a nice pic that I had absolutely to speak about it in a dedicated post on my blog, hope that all copyright stuff are ok ^^. Your work is perfect, as usual! Thanks for sharing with us such a lovely art.

    • Thank you! I’m delighted you liked it and mentioned it in a post! That makes me really happy! :D

(And thank you very, very much for including a link and my credit/copyright info! Just FYI, this is how that caption should read:

Pencils and inks by Adam DeKraker. Colors by Winona Nelson. (c) 2011 Alex Woolfson. yaoi911.com

(I know it’s easy to mix up the “@” symbol with the © symbol. I do that all the time. That’s why it’s sometimes easier to use “(c)”. :) )

I really appreciate you doing this and for letting me know. Made my day!

  3. Biz says:

Love this! Very, very sweet. Just perfect for their story if I think about it, adds to their youthfulness and stays far away from the stereotype – “if to boys are on a bed in their undies they’re only going to be up to one thing”. Congrats Alex, keep it up! I don’t know if I speak on everyone’s behalf with this but, “We” love your smart yaoi comics!

    • Thank you! I’m glad you’re finding that it fits with their characters and doesn’t feel stereotypical. That’s part of what I’m trying to do with my comics, so I’m glad that you’re feeling this is on target for that.

And yep, I love the sweet. Seeing their smiles in this pic just makes me happy. ;)

Thank you very much for the love—and for letting me know what you thought!

  4. bangles says:

    So adorable!! o(=>w<=)o

  5. Flames of Ice says:

Awesome picture! It’s now saved in my background folder for future use! I’m wishing I hadn’t changed it yesterday so I could use it now but it’ll be up on my laptop in a week. If not tomorrow. xD

  6. entente6999 says:

Pillow Fight: Cool!!! Full of life, and fun. Just so nice!!!

  7. gemunderpressure@aol.com says:

Hey! I’m super delayed but whateva. Just wanted to say that I adore this pin-up. It’s been added to my background slideshow on my laptop. ;D Freaked my bestie out when she first saw it, but helped convert her to Yaoi-ism!

Anyways, I really like these exclusive extras. They’re a nice incentive to join the community, AND they tide me over while I’m waiting for more updates. It’s a good system.

Lots of Love comin your way from me to you <3

    • That’s awesome! Glad you were able to get your best friend to join the dark side. Mwa ha ha. ;)

And I’m really glad to hear that you are enjoying the extras! I have another one I’m prepping which should be ready in just another couple weeks…

      Lots of love back!

  8. Cirrus says:

Very cute, though I wouldn’t dare to put it on my desktop, guess I’m still in the closet;)
Love your comics by the way, the art is great, the storyline is fantastic and the dialogue intelligent. “Tough” is my favourite but “Artifice” already has a place in my heart, it is the heart of a sci-fi nerd after all.

Lots of love from your very own fangirl:)

    • Yay! I’m really glad you’re enjoying Tough and Artifice! Thank you very much for letting me know. :D

(And not to worry, the next pin-up should be desktop friendly for even those “in the closet” about their love of yaoi. ;) )

Lots of love back! I hope to hear from you again!

  9. SamCroft says:

    Hey!

Just got the email this morning! It’s such an awesome picture! I love how happy they both are! hehe!

I think have an ‘Safe for work’ one is a good idea! I loved ‘Tough’, because it was awesome to see a strong gay protagonist, and it’d be sweet to be able to have Rob and Mike on my desktop and be able to use my lappy in the library.

    Sam

    • Hey Sam!

      Glad you like it!

Yeah, if there’s something that is likely to be consistent with Yaoi 911, it’s the idea that everyone in a romantic scene is having a good time. I’m not saying I’ll never go to a dark place, but for the most part, it seems like there is plenty of that out there already: lots of images of guys having non-consensual sex and S/M. Part of what I’m looking to offer that’s different are images of two guys together who are unambiguously happy. It’s what I like to see, anyway…

And yep, next wallpaper I send out should be “Safe For Work”. Or, at the very least, everyone has their clothes on. ;)

      Take care of yourself!

  10. DiseasedFace says:

I must honestly say! That I adore and am in terrible love with the characters and WOULD Love that you send the pinups out to us faithful Subscribers!!! I must also say that this one of a pillow fight makes me want to go out and fling pillows at strangers! ;D Feathers fluttering freely are simply fantastic! Huzzah!~

As a side note, the story Tough itself is a remarkable one. I’ve always felt that there weren’t enough stories in comic or book form that involved different and more diverse kinds of relationships between men and men, women and women, and even between different races. When involving more diverse and enriched types of characters/people and their relationships, the stories , i believe, are stronger and leave a stronger impression on its readers. Because in those relationships, the characters have to over come numerous difficult situations within themselves, each other and even their peers and family. Whilst breaking the old shell of the cliche and repetitive white male and white female stories. Its fresh, invigorating and inspiring! I am horribly glad i stumbled(i don’t remember how?) upon your lovely comics, especially ‘Tough’. And I can’t wait for the next… EVERYTHING that you come up with to create. My skin and mind is wriggling with excitement! I truly appreciate all your hard work and efforts, especially since you hand it out for free. And I wish (though i’m sure you will) continue to create such vivacious and powerful stories! As they are one of a kind! Especially since this genre can often get overly obsessed with meaningless sex, and forgets that the relationship and the things the characters go through are just as equally, if not more, important.

    ~applause~

    ~A.S

    • Hey A.S.!

I’m really glad you like it! And yes—go fling pillows at strangers! In your underwear! Do it now! :D

      Ahem. Anyway…

It also makes me happy to hear that you’re liking what I’m trying to do here. I’m definitely looking to show relationships to my readers that hopefully feel real and, connected with that, involve characters from different backgrounds who can show that there’s as many different ways to love as there are people on this planet. My main goal is enrich people’s lives by telling fun stories, but my second goal is to try to increase the empathy folks feel for those who are different than them. I really believe that if people had more empathy for one another, the world would be a much saner, safer and happier place.

I really appreciate the time you took to comment. It put a big smile on my face. And I hope you’ll keep coming back to let me know what you think. :)

      • DiseasedFace says:

Ahaha! Running about in my underwear whilst throwing pillows might get me …in all kinds of trouble! teehee :D

And i most certainly will continue to comment! ~salutes~ I couldn’t stop myself even if I tried ahaha. I certainly agree that the world needs more empathy! People need to realize that we are more alike than we seem when it comes to the very roots of it. We have similar worries and concerns, we have dreams, nightmares, goals, hopes and desires. And whilst we are the same in this very human sense, we are so very diverse. The world is explosive with colours, ideas, and culture. If we refuse to recognize these hues the world will become a very dull place. And your story is exactly the type of thing that can bring colour to the world. For when people do dare and choose to write these sorts of things, people will read, some may even change their opinions. That is the power of writing!

And I really appreciate the time you took to respond! :)

  11. Jade says:

Out of curiosity, Alex, are you and/or part of the Yaoi911 crew going to be at Fanime? *half expecting you to be at artist’s alley*

I’m going for the first time this year, so I’m super excited! If you are doing it, then I can’t wait to see you there!

    ~ Jade

  12. 1412Bunny says:

This picture is awesome!! I really love the characters in “Tough” so it’s really exciting to get such a great picture of them!! Thanks!! :D

  13. HarliqueenNight says:

i love this picture, though my favorite is the last one when they’re in the garage or junk yard i believe and their shirts are off. can you do more soft sensual ones like that one again?

  14. 1412Bunny says:

When’s chapter 3 going to come out? :D

  15. meryvamp says:

You know what I love about this picture? It’s unexpected. Instead of cute, teenage girls throwing pillows in their undies, you’ve got two gorgeous, half-naked men, laughing and just having fun with one another. It’s rather sweet, innocent, and playful fun. Yet, at the same time, and maybe this is just me, but I can see both men ending their rough-housing with heavy panting and someone being pushed down, lol. But that’s only because, well, they are half-naked after all, and men playing “pillow fight” tends to be more rough than the girl version…I think, anyway ;-) Oops, my imagination ran wild again :D
    Anyway, thanks for sharing!

  16. MrIneluki says:

I love your stories, there’s certainly a shortage of sweet gay love comic stories (most are, as you’ve stated before, usualy rather dark themed) and your comics certainly fill that need ♥

Keep up the good work! :D

  17. This was a pleasent surprise when I checked my email. I love the pin-up to bits.

  18. TimYaoi2011 says:

Great art! I’ve found my new desktop pic! Thanks

  19. Molly Dyer says:

I adore these stories, and I like the wallpaper, but I’m eager to see the other, fully-clothed ones as well. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t care who sees my desktop, and if anyone that sees has a problem with it, we’re clearly not on the same page and our friendship probably won’t work out, but I prefer my backgrounds to be calmer, and this one is pretty dynamic. I’d like to see one with them asleep next to each other or cuddling on a couch. Something less sexy and more sweet, I guess. There are times that I really want something sexy, but I have plenty of places to get that. What I really value about Tough is the non-sexy stuff, which is harder to come by than smut.

And while I’m commenting, I feel I should say this, since it’s on my mind: I really respect you for replying to everyone like this. You were polite and kind enough to take the time to read each comment and respond accordingly. I guess it’s not a big deal, but I think it deserved to be mentioned.

    • I hear you. I’ll get on getting those other wallpapers out. :)

And thank you very much for you kind words—both about my stories and the art, but also for my comment policy. I don’t know if I’ll always be able to respond to every comment like I do now, but I’ll always want to. It’s connecting with awesome readers like yourself that makes this all worthwhile. :)

Hi! i just wanted to thank you so very very much! for sharing your talent with us, for making so many people (including me of course) wait eagerly for your updates and news and for turning these moments into highlights of my week:)))
i absolutely adore your Artifice and Tough comics and can only admire the talent it takes to make something like that!
fan-girly squealing aside i think this here is the epitome of sexy-cuteness:P (though i did have a question- the previous pics showed Rod’s hair to be slightly lighter then Mike’s – or is it to do with my monitor playing tricks???)
Thank you again for bringing a smile to my face so often:)<3<3<3

    • You’re very welcome, Alice! I’m really glad that you like this wallpaper.

And your monitor probably isn’t playing tricks; it’s just that this piece is inked so the shadows are a lot darker than what you saw in the comics where the pencils were colored directly.

Thank you for letting me know you liked it!

  21. Lelouch says:

Another awesome job. And truthfully i wouldnt mind getting hundreds of email like this so keep them coming Please!!!

  22. auroraivy says:

I just love the pillow fight scene! It made me smile right away. :D

  23. Joyce Pike says:

I have a lot to say for this pic. It’s simply amazing and the both of them are just too adorable. I’m squealing like a sick fangirl just by looking at them. The picture’s so animated and alive, it’s perfect! Great job! I hope you make a third chapter :) because I just can’t get enough of Mike and Rob.

On the side note, you make me so proud of my origins. At first when I read Mike’s a Filipino, I was like “OMG?!”

And now I’m curious. Why a Filipino? :)

    • Hey Joyce!

I’m delighted that you like it! And there will be a third chapter—I just don’t know right now when the art will pick up for it. But that chapter will be done.

And I’m glad to make you proud too! Why is Mike Filipino? Well, lots of reasons, but some of the main ones have to do with the fact that I have Filipino friends who can keep me honest and that for story purposes, it’s important that Mike be very close to his family. :)

      Thanks again for the props!

      Alex

  24. Nessa says:

    Love this!

Also love how you answer every person, that praises your awesome pictures. :)

Really hope to see more of your stuff. Your pictures are amazing. I really admire your work!

    Wish you all the best

    Nessa

  25. Sage says:

I’m LOVING the comic ‘Tough’ so far! I really hope to read more soon!
And the wallpapers are cute, but the first one in the junkyard didn’t look like either of them and the new pillow fight one has the cheerleader’s hair wrong. :-(
Otherwise, please keep the yaoi up!
PS: It’s nice to see a MAN creating this stuff instead of a bunch of ravenous fangirls (such as myself) for once.

  26. Paulien says:

    Such a sweet playful picture!
I want more!! Especially of the comic!

  27. Sciamachy says:

I love this wallpaper, it’s cute and really fun. It was a really nice little treat to get in my inbox. :D

  28. Roland says:

    Good afternoon Alex!

To bring my opinion about this wallpaper, I first have to thank you for commissioning two great artists.

Adam DeKraker placed our heroes in a sweet and dynamic moment. Lines are simples and character’s expression well done.

Mixed with the talented artist Winona Nelson who gave this drawing a touch of softness. I love how she colorized this drawing and for sure these two artists work well together.

    Thank you all!

  29. ukeshadow says:

Love this picture. Ill be keeping the first one as my background for a while longer… maybe a week before i change it to the pillow fight but I love it. Both were wonderful and beautiful.

Will we be getting any wallpapers from The Young Protectors by any change? I love that comic.

  30. hisoka01 says:

Love your pictures, both are so amazing and beautiful. Mike and Rob you can feel they have fun together and then they are sensuel and hot. Love to read your comics, happy to read the other comics that I did not know about.

You all are amazing, love your art

Happy Easter and have a great weekend

  31. mikepd87 says:

    This is so cute!!!!

  32. terranboy says:

I loved the first two wallpapers. Keep them coming. The more NSFW, the better. Really looking forward to Ch. 3 of Tough.
FYI. Also enjoyed Artifice a lot and am enjoying Young Protectors.

  33. Miguel says:

Nothing like a good sexy pillow fight :)

  34. Frozen-Flower says:

Wow! That’s a really nice picture. Great artwork. They’re so cute >.<
I like it even more than the first wallpaper

  35. Dimension_Witch says:

Adorable! =) I love how the lines aren’t as pronounced as in the actual comic (which I love there). Since it’s a wallpaper it makes it a bit more light :)
Thanks for doing this btw… I gives us a chance to see more of Mike and Rob (although I’m still hoping whatever happened that made you stop this project is resolved someday. As an artist I know how stressed things can get) Just some wishful thinking :)

Keep up the totally awesome work!! <3
