Yaoi Art: Painted Cover Art For “Tough”

April 22, 2009 | | Comments 9 |

So, things are coming together nicely for the release of our next free comic, the 35 page gay teen romance-and-rescue story, “Tough”.

And now I have something very exciting to show you. As I’ve mentioned before, “Tough” is the first chapter in a two volume, seven chapter graphic novel also called Tough (it gets its title from this first chapter). We’ve been working hard on it and it should be ready for download shortly. Well, in the meantime, our artist Winona Nelson has just finished painting the cover art for the book and here it is! (Click on it for a larger view.)

Painted Cover Art For "Tough"

Now, I asked Winona to create an image with our heroes combining the themes of “romance” and “danger” with the specific plot elements of the first chapter and I think she did a fantastic job. Totally nailed it. :-D

(And I especially like the fact that there are layers of meaning to it — at first you see the kissing, and then you see the dangerous shadows and then you see that one of the boys himself (Mike) is also carrying a bat!)

IMHO, it’s intriguing and beautiful, just like a book cover should be… (I’m of course biased, but if I saw a book on the shelf in a bookstore with Winona’s art on it, I’d definitely pick it up and give it a look!)

Having this artwork finished also marks the first time we have an actual item for sale. (Woo hoo!) If you like this painting, you can get a very high-quality print (poster) made of it over at Imagekind. (A perfect way to show off your love of yaoi and style up your crib!)

While there are more flashy sites out there, the thing I like about Imagekind is that in addition to having the best quality paper and printing in the business, they also have very high quality framing. (I’ve bought four prints from them framed, and Imagekind’s framing was superior to what I got here in San Francisco for my other prints.) So, even though I have this art up with other places for sale, Imagekind is the printer I’d recommend if you’d like a really beautiful, very high-quality print for your wall (and especially if you’d like it nicely framed). In addition, they offer a 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee — which also earns my respect.

And another nice thing about Imagekind is that you have the option of getting a “greeting card” of the print where you can actually resize the art — and thus focus directly in on the boys kissing. ;-) For just $4.99, greeting cards are the easiest, most affordable way to own this art.

EDIT: And now, due to popular demand, we’ve created a version of the art with just the kissing — for those who want to focus on the romance without any distractions. You can find that image here:

If mousepads, mugs and postcards are more your thing, we also have a Zazzle store. And Zazzle goes out of their way to make things easy to find and buy on their site with all the bells and whistles an independent creator like me could want. Just check out their crazy flash panel:

You can pretty much get anything you can think of made into a product with your art at Zazzle. Personally, I want the skateboard!

Anyway, that’s the latest on the Yaoi 911 comics front. I hope you like what you see. If you have a moment, please let me know in the comments what you think of Winona’s work! :-D

Hey! Wondering what happens in this story? No problem — we’ll be giving away this comic for free! (When it’s done, that is!) She really has amazing talent, love her site you just go wow! Love the cover, but boy would I feel nervous if I was those two kissing. Excellent stuff! Looking forward to seeing the end result.

Yeah, Winona's got some real game. And she's a lot of fun to work with. I feel very lucky to have her working on our stories. :-)

And thank you for the props — I'll definitely pass on your kind words to Winona. And yeah, I'd feel nervous too if I were those characters. But then, this is Yaoi 911 – I bet they have a few tricks up their sleeves. In fact, I know they do… ;-)

Glad to hear you're looking forward to the comic. In terms of where we are for this story, the pencils for Chapter 1: "Tough" are now finished as is the lettering and we're a third of the way through the colors. Should be able to show the "end result" soon. And that's pretty exciting. Been looking forward to sharing this story for a while now.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment – and I hope to see you here again soon!

    *faints*

That is exactly the sort of art that would have me picking up a book and inhaling deeply (maybe licking too, on my more obsessive crazy days.) I am definitely excited about Yaoi911's release of this piece!

Ms. Nelson's painting is so lush and mysterious! If I was walking down the street, and this painting was in the front window of an art gallery shop, I would be plastering myself to the window, and then, once I regained my footing, I would walk through the door…Holy moley! I was just over at her home site gallery – her 'fine art' prints are magnificent!

Oh lookie how easy it is to walk my fingers over to the Imagekind and Zazzle galleries…

  4. @ButterflyFomori

Wow. Thank you so much for your kind words! I will definitely pass them on to Winona! I'm so glad to hear you liked it!

[tempt]And, you know, I think a framed version of this art would look just lovely in your home. Or maybe that skateboard… Just saying…[/tempt] ;-)

Wow! I can't believe that was painted! It's increadibly smoothe (then again, it was scanned into a computer) and detailed! Beautiful!

I'm going to have a hard time being a member here, huh? I just know that I'm going to end up sitting in front of the computer oggling for hours on end… >.<

Oh well! It's worth it! ^_^

  6. @Jade Merciful

Thanks for the props! I glad you found Winona's work beautiful. :-D (And if by "smooth" you mean clean and with good detail, I agree — although we did not scan in the painting. While Winona does work with traditional media, for the best quality we painted this digitally — so it started and finished in Photoshop. Still looks like it was made with traditional paint, but it's super clean with great detail even at large sizes.)

And I certainly hope you ENJOY being a member here (although for some of us a "hard time" isn't such a bad thing with yaoi ;-) ) And I hope you continue to find your time here "worth it" — and that you'll enjoy the work we'll be coming out with this summer.

Thank you very much for commenting!

    @Alex Woolfson

Yeah, that's what I meant by smooth, that makes more sense as to why it doesn't have any paintbrush strokes. I'm soo blind sometimes! Photoshop is a good program, I use it a bit myself, but I could NEVER do anything as good as this!

So far so good, I've enjoyed just looking around and seeing all that you have to say. And I highly doubt that at any time will this become something that I don't find worthwhile. I most definitely will enjoy your upcoming works. ^_^

And it’s my pleasure to comment! Its fun and a good use of time.

    Talk to you later~

**And the crowd goes wild!** – A real stunner! – I don't know if this was intended, but the painterly style reminds me of those old paintings I remember seeing when I was a Boy Scout as a kid (perhaps in readers digest or Highlights)? – almost like a Rockwell?! :D The poses are wonderful, a heartfelt and warm embrace and kiss. I find myself hoping all turns out well for these two, but I am not sure it will – those shadowy figures do seem poised to strike a terrible blow – just awesome! – I guess I'll just have to bite my nails in anticipation of the 1st installment! Cheers! RC…

  9. @RC

Wow, thanks, RC! I'm really glad you liked it (and that it brought back happy childhood memories.)

Yeah, I also think the style has a bit of that Americana nostalgia to it — especially when you see it at its actual size in a frame (like what I have at home). It's very cool to hear that it helps to get you engaged with the characters, too — the whole point of a cover, after all. ;-)

(And luckily you won't have to bite those nails very long — we'll be sending out the first chapter on March 1!)

Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know what you thought! It's much appreciated!

    Alex
