I loved this comic so much! I’d make me even happier if it had a sequel, mind if I do some fanart?

  2. @Natskii-koi

I’m delighted that you loved “A Shot in the Dark”! (Please tell all your friends. ;-) ) And yes, if there is enough interest, there will be a sequel (and perhaps a pre-quel as well). If enough people ask for it, I’d be happy to do it.

In terms of fanart, first off, thank you very much for asking permission to create fanart — that’s very cool of you, shows real respect to a creator and is much appreciated. :-) I obviously wouldn’t have any problems with art you created just for you and your friends and didn’t publish either in print or on the Internet. And, personally, I would find fan takes on our work very flattering, no matter where they showed up.

The problem for a publisher like myself in this current legal climate is that if you don’t vigorously defend your copyright on the non-harmful stuff — like what you want to do — it might weaken your ability to fight the actually harmful stuff (like someone creating ASITD stories or art and then selling them or saying we authorized them). In addition, there are a number of cases of creators getting sued by fans for ‘stealing their ideas” when those ideas show up in canon sequels and the like (even if the creator got the idea to go there independently, it still happens) — which is unpleasant at best and potentially financially devastating for an independent creator like myself at worst.

I suppose at some point I’ll have to come up with an official Yaoi 911 fan-fiction/fan-art policy, For now, let’s just have it be (and please forgive the legal sounding language, I’m just trying to be clear):

    1) I’m delighted that people would even care about our work enough to be inspired to create fan-art. I have nothing but love in my heart for anyone who would even call themselves a fan. Period.

    2) With that said, unless we exchange an official contract with my signature in actual physical ink on it, under no circumstances do I authorize any derivative works for any of our comics. Anyone who creates derivative works of Yaoi 911 stories does not have any copyright in those stories/art — I do — and I reserve the right to shut them down and come after them with every legal recourse at my disposal. Under no circumstances would it be acceptable to receive money for creating materials based on our copyrighted works.

    3) I also reserve the right NOT to come after those who create fan works, if for business or other reasons I choose not to — this does not mean in any way I am granting a license to create those works or giving up my copyright rights to our work in any way.

    4) The Yaoi 911 official position is that if you are inspired by our works, then you should create stories and characters of your own — and we have a bunch of articles giving advice on doing just that. Creative people deserve to get full credit and compensation for their work — and that certainly includes our fans. :-) If you are inspired by us to tell stories or create art, creating brand new art and letting your audience know you found our work inspirational would be a great compliment.

So… that’s the best I answer I can come up with on short notice. Sorry for all the heavy sounding language: I know your intentions are nothing but good here. I’ll talk to some lawyers and find out exactly what I can allow fans to do without it hurting my ability to fight the bad stuff — honestly, I want to be able to say yes to this kind of thing, as I said, I personally like the idea — but for now, let’s just say that I’m very flattered but the answer is that currently that I would prefer that you didn’t.

At least until I can have a clear idea what I can say “yes” to without hurting my own rights. :-)

Thank you again so much for your kind words. They really do make the effort in creating these comics worthwhile.

    Cheers,

    Alex

  3. Natskii-koi says:

@Alex Woolfson First of all, I’ll try to convince my friends to read it (they’re more fans of the Naruto yaoi thing, I’m currently trying to open them up more things XDD) It’d be very interesting if there would be a sequel and I’m sure a lot of people would want to see it they just haven’t brought it up!
Second: Wow! I never knew there was such a legal process just for fanart, I’m surprised and very impressed as well (especially since you knew many of the legalities as well!), it’s understandable where you’re coming from, since I got to anime conventions and I see what they sell (cheap rip off’s of fanart for five dollars, that I know they didn’t get the artist’s permission from, unless it is the artist there selling such prints) so I get that you don’t really want to delve into the defense and prosecution of such a matter. Oh, and don’t mind about the legal language at all, I understood you clearly!
So I’ll let you get to that when you have the time, for now I’ll just happily sketch away in my notebook and keep it in there, get to me whenever this whole fiasco is settled -smiles- I know how people get when it comes to copyright, a person I watch on Deviantart (actual multiple people) have actually had their art posted in magazines and even DAYCARE SIGNS without their permission (The daycare one is a funny story actually, she drew a fanart of a sleeping Demyx from Kingdom Hearts II and then the daycare used her fanart without her permission, sheesh!)

    Cheers back, Alex

    -Natalie ^-^

  4. @Natskii-koi

Thank you so much for understanding. The truth is, I really do want to say “yes” to fan art, etc. I’ll talk to some lawyers and see if there is a smart way I can do that.

(And yeah, I know that art theft is a big deal on DeviantArt, y-gallery, etc. To not even give credit to an artist for her work, not to mention using it without permission, well, boo to that!)

Right now we’re finishing up “Artifice” and working our way through “Tough” , but I definitely want to revisit Ben and Ethan from “A Shot in the Dark” , so if people keep expressing interest, I’ll put that in the hopper. ;-)

Thanks again, Natalie. Hope to see you here again. :-D

    Alex

  5. sawahi says:

    hi there,
just wanna ask, how many free yaoi has been sent? cause i got only bout 2 email from you since first signup
    :)

  6. @sawahi

Fair question — and to put your mind at ease, there’s just been the two free comics links sent out so far. :-)

But it’s always been our intention to offer more free comics which is why I wrote the high-school BL story Tough in shorter 35-page chapters so that I could have more free comics to send out and in more regular intervals. While I might try making some of the later chapters of that story for-pay downloads to help offset costs, the first chapters will definitely be free. And I’m working with a team of artists on that comic who are fairly quick. The plan is to have the first chapter come out this Spring with a new chapter available for download every 4 months or so.

I haven’t given any specific dates for the release of that first chapter because I don’t want to make any promises I can’t be sure I’ll be able to keep (high quality art takes the time it’s going to take, y’know?). And I haven’t sent out extra emails because, well, I hate spam and if I’m not offering something really awesome to my subscribers, then I don’t want to bug them. (This may be foolish — I probably should send out emails every now and then just to remind people that work is on the way, but I figure my blog serves that purpose and did I mention how much I hate spam? :-) )

I humbly ask for your patience. We are very hard at work on our comics. I spend hours a day, every day working on our stories and with our artists — we have very good stuff coming. If you like what you are seeing here on our blog and what you see in the downloads you’ve already viewed, then I promise the new stuff we’re working on you’ll like even more.

All we want to do is give fans like you the best, smartest, sexiest and most fun yaoi you’ve ever seen. It’s taking a bit longer than I expected to get thing finished, but once our production workflow is set up, things should run more smoothly. It’s my deepest hope you and all our other supporters will find our work worth the wait. :-)

    Alex

  7. Itasasu says:

You said that you have only sent out two free yaoi. I only received A Shot in the Dark and the sneak preview of Artifice. Is the sneak preview part of what you have sent out or am i missing something?

  8. @Itasasu

Nope, you aren’t missing anything. :-) Right now, though, we are coloring the first chapter of Tough — that chapter should be done by end of April and that will be another free comic, Then, God willing, we should be coming out with future chapters on a fairly regular basis, ideally every 4 months or so — and I know for sure right now that PDF downloads for Chapters 2 and 3 will be free for subscribers as well — so there should be some more good stuff soon.

I hope you enjoyed what you’ve seen so far and that you’ll like what we’ll be sending out in the near future. Look for another free comic in a few months — the work on Tough is something we’re very proud of and I hope you’ll like it. :-)

  9. Itasasu says:

Thank you. Thats good to know. I am very much looking forward to everything.

  10. Dee says:

Hi, I checked out “Shot in the Dark” and it was fun! :) There was a nice dash of irony, a witty screw-ball villain, some good action and the romance was just right.

That said, will Artifice be sold as an “online subscription webcomic” or will it be published as a book? I do hope that I can get it in the former because it can be a real hassle to deal with the customs and censorship board.

  11. @Yuri21

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and kind reaction to “A Shot in the Dark”. It made my night. :-)

“Artifice” will absolutely be available as a download as well as being available in print form. As I’ve said (somewhere else, can’t remember now), the plan is to have it be the first “for-pay” download. I’m still deciding on the logistics for that, but the current plan is to absolutely have both digital and print versions of “Artifice”. And I’ll definitely let the Yaoi 911 News & Downloads subscribers know when it’s ready.

I hope you’ll enjoy our other upcoming free comics for Tough as much as you enjoyed “A Shot in the Dark.” Please come back here and let me know what you think of those as well.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment,

    Alex

  12. Dee says:

    @Alex:

“Thank you so much for your thoughtful and kind reaction to “A Shot in the Dark”. It made my night. :-)

    Awww, sure no problem! :)

I’ll be looking forward to the news about Artifice, then. *grins*

Oh, I just saw Tough(the first 12 pages) and you really captured the whole “homophobic” thing very well. Why do some of those boys have to look so pretty though for a bunch of gay bashers? :( And the poor gay man… why’s he so quiet? I got a guess about it… Don’t tell me he’s mute?

  13. @Yuri21 -

Why do some of those boys have to look so pretty though for a bunch of gay bashers?

Heh. Well, this being a yaoi book, it is important that the boys be pretty — even the evil ones. That said, I’ve been surprised with the reaction people have had to Kevin and Bruce — all the women I’ve shown the comic to have just loved those guys to pieces. Kevin, in particular, is quite popular. If there’s enough demand, I might just have to have a bad-boy side story… We’ll see… ;-)

And the poor gay man… why’s he so quiet? I got a guess about it… Don’t tell me he’s mute?

LOL! That’s awesome! That would be some good drama and it would be fun to be vague here and say “You’ll have to just find out” – but I don’t want to be that big a tease. :-D

No, he’s not mute. He just knows he’s not going to be able to talk his way out of this situation – and doesn’t want to give these jerks the satisfaction of him playing along. Instead, he’s trying to think of some way to escape – and that’s where all his brain power is going.

But I like the way you think! Tough looks to be the most “traditional” yaoi book I’m going to make and having a mute character would definitely fit into that. But no – Rob just knows there are some situations you can’t talk your way out of….

Thank you again for your great comments. :-)

  14. Dee says:

Awww, a bad boy story would be good. One which focuses on either Kevin(that’s the leader, right?) or Bruce or both. Ahhh… I’m too greedy. But what wouldn’t be the fun in having some closeted characters? But Kevin is some eyecandy all right.

Oh well, you evil evil boys… I wonder what kinda punishment would be right for them. Hmmm… maybe being hung from a rope while a pack of ravenous monkeys screech and eye them. Nah that’s too much of a punishment. :p

That’s true. Why bother talking your way out unless you’re Mr Diplomat or know some martial arts? Think Rob, think! And don’t get hit: it’s bound to hurt like hell. :(

  15. @Yuri21

Yep – Kevin and Bruce. That’s the pairing that’s been requested. I have an idea or two… :-D

And as for whether Rob gets hit… well, you’ll just have to wait and see… ;-)

  16. Dee says:

    ROFL… I can’t wait to see how that happens. And what their “friends” would say. ^^;;

Sure, I’ll wait and see. :p

  17. silverstone says:

  18. @silverstone

Thank you for your interest in our comics. :-) When you sign up for the Yaoi 911™ News and Downloads mailing list and click on the confirmation email that is sent to you, you are sent an email with links to our free downloads. I don’t see your email on the mailing list, though. Did you fill out the form on THIS page? If you did, could you please try filling in the form on this page one more time, just to make sure there wasn’t a computer glitch?

If, after you do this, you still have not received the links, please let me know. I’ll do my best to help! :-)

    Thanks!

  19. bull019 says:

Me too, I already registered but I haven’t received any free comics or links…

  20. I’m sorry to hear that! But I do see your email on the the Yaoi 911™ News and Downloads list so I know you filled out the form on this page. Maybe my email service is being slow (or maybe the Welcome Email wound up in your spam folder – adding our email address announce_list at yaoi911.com to your Address Book should solve that problem, if that’s what’s going on. :-) )

In any case, I have just sent the links directly to your email. I really hope you enjoy them!

    Cheers,

    Alex

hope the hear from u soon.
    bye!!!!

  26. @akizuki

The link to the free comic would have been sent to you in the Welcome Email after you subscribed to the mailing list on this page. It usually takes about an hour or so for my email service to send you the Welcome Email after you’ve confirmed your subscription.

I do see your email on our list so just in case it somehow got lost in the Internets, I’ve sent you the links directly as well.

I hope you enjoy them! :-D

  27. JRBrown says:

    Hey Alex;

Rummaging around the DLSite website I found what looks like a Japanese translation of “A Shot in the Dark”; way to go with the cross-marketing! I’m assuming you get a cut? :D

  28. @JRBrown

Yep – I was the one who created and listed the Japanese version of “A Shot in the Dark” (you can also find the link for the Japanese DLSite on the bottom of our Japanese language page). Thus, yes, I do get a (very tiny) cut.

I created Japanese version of the story to test the waters and see how well a Japanese e-comic might do. (Although, I’ll admit that I also made it to have some of our work to share with Japanese creators whom I admire. :-D ) I had planned to translate all of our comics into Japanese, but right now I’m not sure how economically feasible that is. If there were huge interest I would definitely do it, but right now the response (while positive) has been mild. If interest increases, though, then I might reconsider.

I do thank you for bringing it up here, though. It’d been a little while since I checked out the English language DLSite and I notice that someone has recently posted a new comment on the comic — and that was fun to read. ;-)

  29. akizuki says:

    ALex:
I just wanted to thank u, i got the comic and i enjoyed it! please let me know where i can find more information ans stories, is it true that i can find Naruto but in Yaoi Version?

  30. @akizuki

You’re very welcome — glad to hear you enjoyed it! :-D

I’m not an expert on Naruto Yaoi, but I did find some (NSFW!) fanart here. Hope you enjoy that too!

    Alex

Gosh, sorry to hear that. I’ve sent the links directly to your email address. Just in case, double-check your spam folder to make sure emails from us aren’t getting filtered so you won’t miss out on future comics that we send. :-)

Thank you for your interest in our work!

  33. simon-ewing says:

Cool place. i’ve only been here for a few minutes and I already like this place.

  34. @simon-ewing

Glad to hear it. Hope to see you back here often. :-D

  35. starchaser27 says:

I really enjoyed A Shot In The Dark and I am hoping you’ll do a sequel or even a prequel. The characters had quite a bit of depth for such a short story. I also like your site. I found it a while ago and just came back while looking through my bookmarks. Keep the great yaoi coming, please.

  36. @starchaser27

Well, heck — thank you very much for the props! Always nice to hear back from folks who enjoyed our work. :-D

And…. the first chapter of Tough is very , very close to being ready to send…. I don’t dare to give a date at this point, as life has a way of, well, getting in the way….. but it’s close, so be on the lookout for it in your Inbox this Fall. As for a sequel/prequel to “A Shot in the Dark”, I’ve always said that if there is enough interest, I’d do it. I’ll consider this another vote in favor. :-)

Anyway, thanks for taking the time to let me know your thoughts! I hope to see you back here soon! :-D

  37. Ris-chan says:

I’ve been advertising for you again Alex, just so you know~! ^_^ I know I’ve been MAI for a while, I just kind of found myself drowning in school work… Then again, that’s what happens when you get sick for two weeks and a half… Ugh, all that make up work was killer! But I should be back more often now! You are still as awesome as ever~! ^_^ Yeah I know, I’m a kissass, but I’m an HONEST kissass. I missed this cite more than you will ever know. How have you been though?

Good to talk to you again~
    Jade “Ris-chan”

  38. @Ris-chan

Hey Jade — good to hear from you — and glad to hear you’ve recovered from your illness. :-)

And thank you for putting out the word on our comics! Pages 1-24 of Chapter One Tough (and all of Ch 2) are now colored, so we’re finally getting close to sending the next one out — very exciting. Been working hard on getting everything lettered (all the words in the word balloons and sound effects and so forth…) So, that’s what I’ve been up to — dotting all the “i”‘s and crossing all the “t”‘s getting that first chapter ready for our 10,000 strong mailing list. It’s a lot of work but very satisfying. :-)

  39. Ris-chan says:

    @Alex Woolfson
Heh heh, yeah, upper respriatory infection, no fun >_< I likes to breathe! XD

No problem! I was thinking of Advertising on GaiaOnline for you, but I don't think any advertisement I could make would do you justice.

Awesome possum~! I look forward to seeing that on the shelf! I'll ask for it for my birthday XD (Yeah, I know, I should buy it myself, but I'm saving up for Collage). Catch yah later~

  40. Ris-chan says:

    @Alex Woolfson
Yeah, upper respiratory infection, no fun… I like to breathe XD I’ve always gotten sick easily though so I’m used to it I suppose.

No problem~! I’m just looking forward to you publishing them so that I can get the books~! Maybe for my birthday~! I’ll get my family or friends to buy me them (I would, but I’m far from rich so… It wont work >_> )

I would advertise for you on GaiaOnline (since that’s my favorite place in the world to be) but first off I can’t access it from school, and second, I don’t think I could create a banner worthy of your site and books and all… T_T Sorry~!

God I missed you and this site~ ^_^ Sooo much more relieving than sitting hitting my head on the desk (just kidding, just kidding). Seriously though, I’m more than willing to advertise, because you are totally awesome~! ^_^

    Laters~!
    Jade

  43. Nanani says:

    @Ris-chan

    Nooo it did’t work.

  44. Ris-chan says:

    @Nanani

    That bites! And is really… weird… O_o

Did you get an email and it didn’t work or did you not get an e-mail?

  45. RC says:

Hi Alex, Karla and Winona – Just a quick note: D/L’d “A shot…” loved it! (just one crit tho’ – more kissing pleeze! ;-) ) I loved the story and artwork (I especially loved the mixed race pairing – Ethan reminded me of my Koran bf)…
I am a pro artist interested in refocusing my career in graphic novels. Everything I’ve seen on your site is really impressive and inspiring.. You’ve got a new Fan – Thanx!! -RC- ^_~

  46. @RadCelt

Thank you so much, RC! Glad to hear you loved it!

And yes, I like the mixed race pairings in couples as well, mainly because not every gay guy is white or Japanese, you know? Glad you saw your bf in Ethan — he must be a very sweet guy. ;-)

(BTW, I think the request for more kissing is completely reasonable — and, well… the first chapter of Tough which we’re sending out on March 1st also is low on the kissing. ::hides in corner:: You see, we’re setting up the characters and stuff and want to give readers something to look forward to. But let me tell you that Chapter Two — which is already finished and will be sent out on May 1 — more than makes up for it! Lots ‘o kissing. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed! And Artifice, our first graphic novel scheduled to be released this fall, has kissing and, well, more. I don’t think you’ll find anything to criticize on the kissing front with that one. Not at all.. ;-) )

Also glad to hear that you found this site inspiring for your own work. We need more talented people creating great guy-on-guy comics. Good luck with the refocusing and when you get your own site set up, please shoot me a link!

    Take care!

    Alex

  47. Nanani says:

It won’t let me view this comic..Adobe hates me

  48. Oh, Adobe — don’t you be hating! :-)

Sorry to hear that you’re having trouble. Here are two things to try:

First, I know this might sound silly, but some folks have gotten confused by it. Adobe Reader only reads PDF files. The comic is a PDF, but in order to send it to you safely over the Internet, I had to compress it as a ZIP file. You have to open the ZIP file first to get the PDF. Mac computers automatically open ZIP files, but some Windows PCs don’t. If yours doesn’t, you need a ZIP application. A good, open-source, free one can be found here:

    http://www.7-zip.org/

Once you have the ZIP file open, you will see the PDF file. If Adobe won’t read it, Adobe Reader might be corrupt or out-of-date. Downloading the latest version fixes most problems. You can download the latest version here:

    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Please try those steps and let me know if they fix the problem.

And thank you very much for your interest in our work! :-D

  49. Ris-chan says:

    @Alex Woolfson
Alex hooray for a comic coming out on my birthday~! ^_^ March first~! ^_^ I haven’t forgotten you, just so you know~!
Oh good news for you~ I’m trying to graduate early now~ ^_^

  50. @Ris-chan

Ah, well, Happy Birthday in advance! I’m glad I can send you a birthday present!

I hope you have a wonderful birthday — and good luck with the early graduation. May all your birthday wishes come true. :-)
